STATEMENT
Angela Conant’s practice encompasses hand-carved stone sculpture, painting and drawing, as well as curatorial and collaborative projects.
Conant considers the human body’s knowability through the mind’s eye versus medical wisdom; a tension sharpened by experiences of childbirth, loss and neurodivergence. Her paintings and drawings reorient the viewer to look out from inside the body, proposing imagined internal systems that tease technical representation while coaxing hypochondrial unease. Hand-carved stone elements seep and poke through orifices, interrupting a trompe-l'œil yet fantastical pictorial space of tubes and arteries.
She uses materials like Tyvek as poetic parallels for corporeal membranes and organs, while stone protrusions evoke the looseness of our bodily containers. In her sculpture, rock is rendered illusorily tender: penetrated by latex tubing, emerging from wooden figure-like pedestals, or draped over medical grab-bars to reference the interdependence of flesh with assistive objects.
Conant’s works approach the bodily experience with humility, curiosity and imagination, in sardonic contrast with the paternalistic western tendencies of fear, shelter and control.
